By now, most South Florida schools have finished the second round of statewide testing, often called PM2, and a lot of parents are getting those results back. What is the PM2 test, and why did my child just take it?
PM2 stands for the second progress monitoring test of the school year. Florida schools use it to check in on how kids are doing in reading and math, halfway through the year, so teachers and parents both have a clearer picture before spring testing. Some schools give the test in December, while others wait till January.
It’s not a pass or fail test. It’s more like a checkpoint, a way to catch anything that needs attention while there’s still plenty of the school year left to work with.
My child’s PM2 score wasn’t what I hoped. What does that mean?
First, take a breath. One score is a snapshot, not the whole story. It tells you something is worth looking into, but it doesn’t tell you exactly why, and it doesn’t tell you what to do next on its own. If your child isn’t meeting promotion criteria, that means they’re not on track to move to the next grade.

What if I just wait to see how the next test goes?

Most of the time, it either stays the same or grows, especially without any change in support between now and then. Waiting to fail in the spring almost certainly points toward your child being held back.
Waiting for the next test just means waiting to find out the same thing again, only with less time left to do something about it.
